...nothing new under the sun..."

Hey everyone,

Some of you may recognize that phrase from the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes.

Remember the invocation of 1930s Germany in my last post? Good. Let's drive it another mile down the road.

Adolf Hitler spent good coin to encourage the spread of Nazi propaganda in America during World War II. He found many willing enablers, up to and including sitting members of the US Congress. Perhaps the rally in 1939 (at Madison Square Garden, no less) gave him a clue as to how large his American family was. More here.

The ultimate goal was to overthrow the US government, and replace it with Hitler-style fascism. The coup-plotters failed. It would culminate in the largest sedition trial in American history, which ended when the presiding judge died suddenly in the middle of the proceedings. The accused were thus never held accountable. Rachel Maddow spilled the tea in the recent past. More here.

One could argue that their descendants and spiritual heirs are alive and kicking, which brings us to present day. Specifically, to the rally at Madison Square Garden this week, organized by the former president as a closing argument for why Americans should return him to the White House. To summarize: he so invoked the memory of that 1939 event that he was forced to deny the uncanny resemblance - the 'coincidental' similarity in imagery, tone and cadence. The backlash has been swift and severe for his campaign.

There was a blockbuster report last week of how he would fantasize about having generals in 'his' army "like Hitler's generals". He would further expound the Fuhrer's virtues by insisting that "Hitler did some good things". To my knowledge nobody has ever asked him to name a few.

And so it is that America faces the stark choice, in less than a week, between fascism-fueled wet dreams and plain vanilla American democracy. No pressure.
